Ego On The Highway

Ego On The Highway

My Daily Journal -October 15, 2025

Last night, I was on the way to the airport to pick up our son.
Somewhere between a busy intersection and the ramp to 45, it turned into chaos. Nothing unusual during Houston rush hour.
Cars were packed in tight — everyone pushing, shoving their vehicles forward like the lane was a prize to be won.

Then this guy in a pickup just pushed his way through the intersection right in front of me.
Didn’t care. Didn’t hesitate. Just muscled through like the road belonged to him.
You could tell this was his normal — end of a long workday, sweat still on his shirt, attitude still on his sleeve.
He kept forcing his way through traffic, inches from bumpers, zero care for anyone around him.

I felt it rise in me too — that flash of annoyance.
I even said to my wife, “People are just mad crazy out here tonight.”
Because it felt like it.
The tension in the air was thick — everyone running on fumes and frustration.

And then, not long after, I saw the headline:

“Road Rage Incident — One Person Shot.”

Same city. Same night.
Shaking my head.
Because it could’ve been right there, that same stretch of highway, just minutes apart.
One wrong word, one bad move, one ego too proud to back down.

We never know how close we are to tragedy until it’s too late.
That’s the scary part.

All it takes is to agitate that one person who is in the wrong state of mind. Of course there’s no excuse for any rage on the road.

So today, I remind myself — it’s not worth it.
The horn. The anger. The “I’ll show him” moment.
You never really win those battles.

I pray that man made it home safely.

And that maybe next time, we all choose patience over pride.
Because in the end, we’re all just trying to get home.

Till next time

-Michael
